I’ll admit it, I haven’t been using Windows for a while. So when I got a new Windows 10 PC and started using it, one of my first questions was “What is this annoying People icon and how do I remove it?” That’s what we’re going to disable today.
What Is the People Icon, Anyway?
The People icon lets you pin some contacts to your Taskbar so you can quickly chat with them via Skype or send them an email. Right now, it doesn’t integrate with apps you might actually want to use—like Facebook or Twitter or Whatsapp or…you get the point. Hopefully, you’ll be able to text from your PC at some point, but knowing Microsoft, they’ll make it a completely different application.

More savvy readers probably disable this thing the very second they installed Windows 10, and they haven’t thought twice about it since then. But it’s there, and it’s annoying, and, for now at least, it’s pretty pointless. Who needs it?

Pointless features annoy me. Luckily, it’s really easy to make this one go away. Just right-click on the Taskbar and uncheck the “Show People on the taskbar” option.

Because this feature is pointless and I just wanted to complain about it. That’s why. And you wanted to read about me complaining about it. And that’s okay too.

How to Enable or Disable People Bar on Taskbar in Windows 10
Starting with Windows 10 build 16184, there is a new People
button on the taskbar notification area. Whether you want to share a photo, make plans for dinner, or get an answer from a friend or coworker – My People is here to take it to the next level and bring the people you care about most to the center of your experience.
If you like, you can enable a policy that allows you to remove the People Bar from the taskbar and disables the My People experience.
This tutorial will show you how to enable or disable the
My People experience and People Bar on the taskbar for specific or all users in Windows 10.
You must be signed in as an administrator to enable or disable the People Bar.
- Option One: Enable or Disable People Bar on Taskbar in Local Group Policy Editor
- Option Two: Enable or Disable People Bar on Taskbar for All Users using a REG file
EXAMPLE: My People experience and People Bar enabled and disabled
Enable or Disable People Bar on Taskbar in Local Group Policy Editor
The Local Group Policy Editor is only available in the Windows 10 Pro, Enterprise, and Educationeditions.
All editions can use Option Two.
1. Open the all users, specific users or groups, or all users except administrators Local Group Policy Editor for how you want this policy applied.
2. In the left pane of the Local Group Policy Editor, click/tap on to expand User Configuration,

4. Do step 5 (enable) or step 6 (disable) below for what you would like to do.

A) Select (dot) either Not Configured or Disabled, click/tap on OK, and go to step 7 below. (see screenshot below)
Not Configured is the default setting.

7. When finished, you can close Local Group Policy Editor if you like.
8.Restart the explorer process, sign out and sign in, or restart the computer to apply.

The downloadable .reg files below will add and modify the DWORD value in the registry keys below.

A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 4 below.

4. Save the .reg file to your desktop.
5. Double click/tap on the downloaded .reg file to merge it.
6. When prompted, click/tap on Run, Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK to approve the merge.
7.Restart the explorer process, sign out and sign in, or restart the computer to apply.
8. You could now delete the downloaded .reg file if you like.

You may want to think of it as the Windows 10 Universal People app, but it’s really just Windows 10’s contact list. Nothing pretentious about it. In fact, at this point, it isn’t even a capable as the contact list in Windows 8.1, which is saying something.
The Windows 10 People app keeps a list of contacts. If you hook things up right, it’ll import contact lists from a variety of sources — the usual email contact lists (Office 365, Exchange, Outlook.com, Gmail.com, iCloud), plus a very few contact list managers available for sale in the Microsoft Store.
Microsoft has promised that it was going to build bridges to more apps and sites with contact lists — Twitter, Pinterest, LinkedIn, the various Messenger and chat apps, Facebook, Sina Weibo, and heaven-knows-what-all, but it isn’t clear how far Microsoft will get in its quixotic quest.
Putting contacts in the Universal People App in Windows 10
If you set up Mail with a Hotmail/Outlook.com, Gmail, or Exchange Server account, all the contacts belonging to that account have already been imported into People. If you set up more than one Hotmail/Outlook.com account, for example, all the contacts in both accounts have been merged and placed in People.
But you aren’t even halfway done yet.
Adding accounts to Universal Windows People in Windows 10
Before you start pulling all your contacts from Hotmail/Outlook.com, Gmail’s Contacts, Exchange Server, Office 365, and all the others realize that there are side effects, not just in establishing Microsoft-controlled links with outside applications, but even inside the core Win10 Universal productivity apps, Mail, People, and Calendar.
Before you add an account to People, be aware of the effect that adding that account has in other tiled apps. Here’s how connecting the following accounts with Universal People affects other tiled apps:
- Google account: This brings in your Gmail contacts but not your Google+ contacts. In addition, it adds your Gmail account to the Universal Windows Mail app. (Apparently Microsoft hasn’t dug in to the Google+ social networking mill yet.)
- Hotmail/Outlook.com account: This brings in your Hotmail/Outlook.com (and Windows Live) contacts and hooks up the email accounts to the Universal Windows Mail app.
- Other accounts: Although you can add other accounts (POP3 and IMAP email accounts) to the Universal Windows People app, doing so does not import anything to Universal Windows People. Rather, it simply adds the connected email account to the Universal Windows Mail app.
Now that you understand the implications, you’re ready to add accounts. Here’s how to add many/most/all your contacts (you get to choose how many accounts to connect) to the Universal Windows People app:

If you added too many accounts to your Universal Windows People list, there’s a way to drop back ten yards and punt — prevent Universal People from showing all the contacts from a specific source — without laboriously deleting individual entries.
Here’s how:
- Bring up the People app from the Start screen.
Tap or click the People tile, if you have one. Or click Start, scroll down to the Ps, and choose People. - From the main People screen, click the Settings icon, at the bottom.
The dialog box appears. - At the bottom, click or tap Filter Contact List.
The options appear. - Select and deselect the boxes, so you display only the contacts that you want to see.It’s easier to scale back duplicates that way — but harder to update older entries.
A little English translation: “Hide contacts without phone numbers — Off” means you want to see all your contacts, whether you have phone numbers for them or not.
Editing a Windows 10 contact
If you want to change the information associated with a Universal Windows 10 People person (altogether now: “One eyed, one horned, flying purple people person”) — a contact — here’s how to do it:
- Inside Universal People, tap or click a contact’s tile.
The contact details appear. Note that clicking the Timeline link near the top gives you a list of all your recent interactions with the contact, er, Universal Person, including emails, messages, and tweets, although the Twitter connection hasn’t worked reliably for me.It’s not at all obvious, but from the contact card, you can click the email address and send a message, or click one of the Map links and see the Universal Windows Map app, pointing to the indicated address. - Click or tap the pencil icon.The Edit Outlook Contact pane appears.
- If you have multiple sources of contacts (say, multiple Outlook accounts, or accounts added in the Universal Windows Mail app), choose which contact you want to edit.Ultimately, you end up on the editing page.
- Change the information you want to change.
- Very important: Tap or click Save.
If you don’t explicitly Save your changes, they’ll disappear, and you won’t be warned.
No, it isn’t like you’re in the 21st century, where contact apps make changes immediately and without prompts.
In Windows 10, the Settings app, along with the Control Panel, lets you change a wide range of settings to customize your experience, and change system, network, account, and privacy settings.
However, if you're a network administrator for an organization, or you share your PC with other people, you know that letting non-technical users access settings will often result in misconfigurations.
If you don't want anyone altering the settings on your computer, in Windows 10 you can quickly prevent this by disabling access to the Settings app and the Control Panel using the Local Group Policy Editor and the Registry. This not only ensures your configurations will be preserved all the time, but it also helps stop users from modifying settings accidentally.
In this Windows 10 guide, we walk you through the steps to restrict access to the Settings app and Control Panel on your computer.
How to disable Settings and Control Panel using Group Policy
If your PC is running Windows 10 Pro (or Enterprise), the easiest way to restrict access to the Settings app and the Control Panel is to use the Local Group Policy Editor.
To disable Settings and Control Panel using Group Policy, do the following:
- Use the Windows key + R keyboard shortcut to open the Run command.
- Type gpedit.msc and click OK to open the Local Group Policy Editor.
- Browse the following path:
User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Control Panel
- On the right side, double-click the Prohibit access to Control Panel and PC settings policy.
- Select the Enabled option.
- Click Apply.
- Click OK.
After you complete these steps, users won't be able to open the Settings app, and those who try to open the Control Panel will ee this message: 'This operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator.'

If you want to change the settings back, you can always use the same instructions, but on step No. 5, make sure to select the Not Configured option.
How to disable Settings and Control Panel using Registry
If you're running Windows 10 Home, you won't have access to the Local Group Policy Editor, but you can still block users from accessing the Settings app and Control Panel on Windows 10 by modifying the Registry.
Warning: This is a friendly reminder that editing the registry is risky, and it can cause irreversible damage to your installation if you don't do it correctly. We recommend to making a full backup of your PC before proceeding.
To prevent users from changing settings on Windows 10 using the Registry, do the following:
- Use the Windows key + R keyboard shortcut to open the Run command.
- Type regedit, and click OK to open the Registry.
- Browse the following path:
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionPoliciesExplorer
- Right-click on the right side, select New, and then click on DWORD (32-bit) Value.
- Name the key NoControlPanel and press Enter.
- Double-click the newly created DWORD and set the value from 0 to 1.
- Click OK.
Once you complete these steps, users won't be able to open the Settings app, and those who try to open the Control Panel will see this message: 'This operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator.'
At any time you can revert the changes by following the same steps, but this time in step No. 6, make sure to switch the value from 1 to 0.
Wrapping things up
Although this feature is particularly useful in a network environment, such as when configuring a kiosk or guest machine, there are many other scenarios where disabling the Settings app and the Control Panel will come in handy too.
For example, if you share a device in the house with children, and you don't want them messing around with the settings on Windows 10. It's also helpful if you're the tech support person for your family and friends, and they keep calling you to reconfigure a feature over and over again. You can fix their computer once, and then block them access to change settings, so you get fewer support calls.
